I like the phrase "got into the sink..." <sigh> You sound like a 4 year old trying to explain how the scissors somehow "got into" their hair and lopped off a chunk. Stop using the passive verb "got" to try to escape the reality that you DID something.

You're over 18; be an adult, take responsibility for what you did...or head back to Digg; I'm sure they have a whole area devoted to how to get out of doing your homework. You made a simple mistake; it won't be the last. Is this how you're going to handle all of them?

You screwed over your neighbors as well. At minimum you should apologize to them for messing up their days. The maintenance guy was doing his job to try to prevent what you did from doing any more damage to your neighbors' apartments/belongings and the building. What a cop out to try to shift the blame to him. You sound like all the Republicans out there pointing fingers at Obama when their actions of the previous 8 years caused the problems he's trying to fix. Their screaming and hollering is simply a diversion.

If you think you are responsible, you should pay.

I don't think I am responsible. The drains/pipes are incredibly old, and they obviously have not made any attempts to upgrade or maintain them for some time. Also, I highly doubt something I did would cause water or anything to back up in the unit above me.

Well, either way are you familiar with the Daley Centers Renters Clinic? There's also a firm that does pro Bono work for Chicago renters.

I checked my lease and it says that the landlord is responsible for maintaining a functional plumbing facility in good working order. I am not familiar with the Daily Centers Renters Clinic. Though I suppose when I'm on break I will probably google them. Would you happen to know the name of the firm?

lovesmasher 1 point2 points 7 months ago[-]

I would contact a lawyer when you get the 'bill'.

ContentWithOurDecay -1 points0 points 7 months ago[-]

Would you move everything out of the apartment and deny that you did anything?

lovesmasher 1 point2 points 7 months ago[-]

I would suggest that you won't call the police on the trespassing maintenance guy (they are only allowed to enter your apartment if you're given proper advance notice, you give permission or there's an emergency) if they don't bother you with the plumbing issue.

ContentWithOurDecay 0 points1 point 7 months ago[-]

Is there a time frame limit on calling the police on the maintenance guy entering, it happened yesterday at about 9:30pm. Can he construe a plumbing problem for the guy below me as an emergency?

lovesmasher 1 point2 points 7 months ago[-]

If it happened during the plumbing issue, he's probably got good cause and you're probably not going to be able to deny it. You'll need to make them sue you for the money if you want to try to stop them getting it at this point.

ContentWithOurDecay 0 points1 point 7 months ago[-]

It happened during the plumbing issue, he came in and saw my shit all over the kitchen floor. Which doesn't really affect the drain issue at all, but it'd be hard for me to deny doing any brewing at all (the plan I was thinking about going with, removing everything so there is no evidence). But he saw it, but can't really prove it.

Maybe say, yeah I was brewing but nothing of my knowledge got down the sink. Don't say specifically how much of the hops did, and don't offer to pay for anything. If they send bill, get lawyer?

<----- Never rented, not really assertive...

lovesmasher 1 point2 points 7 months ago[-]

Exactly. Don't volunteer anything, and if billed, let them know that you're pretty sure that your lease doesn't require you to pay for your own plumbing maintenance. If they insist, get a lawyer.

ContentWithOurDecay 0 points1 point 7 months ago[-]

Lease says "lessor to maintain plumbing facilities in good working order."

lovesmasher 1 point2 points 7 months ago[-]

You're not the Lessor, you're the Lessee.

ContentWithOurDecay 0 points1 point 7 months ago[-]

Yeah, I just realized that. So, just deny putting anything in the drain, ask why the drain above me is not working while my drain is working fine.

A lawyer will cost $600+ for something that you might be charged $150 for. So no, a lawyer is likely not worth it at all. Tell them your side of the story and say that you don't feel you're responsible for the any plumbing costs (even tempered the whole time). If they insist, use the vague phrase "nobody wants to go through the time and expense of pursuing formal action", and work out splitting the costs.

If you really feel you shouldn't pay, then there's small claims court (about $150), where you won't need a lawyer. Regardless, with or without a lawyer, you may lose and pay the whole amount.

lovesmasher 1 point2 points 7 months ago[-]

$150 won't cover private plumbing most times. He's talking about someone coming to check and repair plumbing in the entire building. An extremely cheap plumber gets around $88/hour. At two hours per floor, the guy is looking at at least $704 in labor. That's assuming that nothing needs to be replaced or repaired.

aWombat 0 points1 point 7 months ago[-]

I guess it will depend on the final plumber bill, but a lawyer will charge $200+ an hour, and 3 hours will definitely not cover it if it goes to court. That'd be a thousand bucks minimum.

I recommend trying to resolve it without it getting to that point.

DO A BARREL ROLL

ContentWithOurDecay 1 point2 points 7 months ago[-]

Ok, I did that. Now what? ; )

repoman 0 points1 point 7 months ago[-]

Umm... that's it. Everything should be fine now.
