Comic Sans: My wife refused to stop using it. Tonight I finally broke her by explaining it thusly: Using Comic Sans is like having bad body odor - you don't notice it, your friends can't stand it, but nobody is impolite enough to tell you. (self.funny)

railrulez 7 points8 points9 points 11 months ago[-]
Not really a reply to you, stesch, but want to underscore the same point. I don't like Comic sans, and I understand all the points about why it is unprofessional, but the argument finally comes down to "it was not designed to be a professional font". The rest of the arguments ("the design irks typographers", "overused more than your mom", etc.) aren't very compelling.
I've tried to explain about Comic Sans to PhDs and professors I know that use it in their presentations. They say that (1) it's perfectly readable; (2) not many people they know make snap judgments just because they see Comic Sans, so they reckon they're covered.
Are there other arguments to stop using it?

This brings up another annoying problem in font terminology: "Old English" being used as a term for blackletter script, when in fact the use of blackletter script began after the Old English period, and was not unique to English, with script of the Old English period itself bearing no resemblance to it.

My physics course was written in Comic Sans, including formulas.
At the very least I would expect people not to use Comic Sans for a course text, because it’s a lot of text and Comic Sans is not easy on the eyes, but then going through the effort of typesetting formulas in Comic Sans just boggles the mind.

Disagreed. A course syllabus doesn't warrant the effort required from LaTeX. Just open $NAME_OF_WORD_PROCESSING_SOFTWARE and bang out a few headings and bulleted lists. It shouldn't take more than five minutes.
Now, Comics Sans, on the other hand...

What's all this popularity with Latex? I mean, most places I've worked just used Word doc/docx and at the very most, converted them to PDF. Fully searchable, easy to track changes from multiple users, and with a little bit of work, they could be made to look very slick.

The effort required from LaTeX? Check out Lyx. Basically it is getting to write stuff using all the LaTeX goodness but displays the result how it will look after you convert it to a pdf.

BlamBot is the nexus for comic lettering and, with so many great comic fonts available for free, the consensus is you should ban Comic Sans, even in comics, if only because it's so easy to recognize that you're exposing yourself to prejudice (warranted or not).
sirgrimme 10 points11 points12 points 11 months ago[-]
Thank you for a swift and cogent answer.
Before looking at this I had no idea there was such variation in comic book typography and just assumed everything used something which was at least very similar to Comic Sans. I guess whenever I read comic books, the fonts do their job and are never obtrusive enought for me to notice.
fancy_pantser 8 points9 points10 points 11 months ago[-]
...and it's all meant to emulate the dudes that used to hand-letter every page of every comic back in the day. I can't imagine how hard it was to remain consistent, especially if you worked on several comics and they all had 'signature' typefaces.
wwwwolf 1 point2 points3 points 11 months ago[-]
I've seen a lot of comic books from recent years and none have used Comic Sans. At least here, most publishers either hand-letter the comics or use custom hand-lettering fonts that are based on their earlier great publications (or so it seems, based on what I've heard). There's a lot of great comic lettering fonts out there, even free ones.

basilisk 11 points12 points13 points 11 months ago[-]
That's what I don't like about font-bashing. It's not about being among the cool kids, you know. If you can look at a page typeset in Times New Roman, good for you. I can't, because I think the font is ugly. If you like Papyrus, it's cool. It's a pretty font, alright. But if you're a professional designer, try not to use it, as it's everywhere. There are plenty of good fonts out there, no need to stick to this particular one.
In any case, use whichever you like. Screw "what is acceptable". I personally like the new Microsoft C-fonts (Calibri, Cambria, all those) very much.
GuySmilee 3 points4 points5 points 11 months ago[-]
If we can continue the body odor analogy, the Microsoft C-fonts are the equivalent strongly vanilla-scented perfumes. Some people like them, whereas others find they can't focus on anything while they're there, stinking up the room.
Don't even get me started on font smoothing, ClearType, or any of that fuzzy crap.

el_chupacupcake 4 points5 points6 points 11 months ago* [-]
Comic Sans, in the design world, is the equivalent of a programmer using poorly contrived variable names, zero documentation/comments, and no tabulation. If they're programming in HTML/CSS, then they'd also have left off a few closing brackets when it comes to text formatting. If it's not in something as simple as web programming, then they've set the program to be a horrible resource hog.
Yes, the code will still run, and yes the program will be usable... but it's as if they've set out to make your inner programmer twitch in revulsion.
In essence, the way designers feel about Comic Sans is probably the way you feel about Adobe Acrobat.

Why? Not because it was cutsey. ONLY comic sans draws all letters (notably the lower-case a) the same was a standard early-education program teaches young children to make them. Using any other font might confuse the students.
So remember this: if you use comic sans, you are telling the person you're writing to that you believe they have the mentality of an easily-confused three to six-year-old.

The format of:

Word of advice: 99% of the population doesn't notice or care what kind of formatting you use.
...But what about the kind of font? :p
redgod6661 1 point2 points3 points 11 months ago[-]
lol-I had a client that INSISTED on using this font. For everything, titles, body copy, lists... I gave him a whole contact sheet of different fonts, deliberated for 10 mins with me and redecided on it. Guess where that went.
Shawnanigans 2 points3 points4 points 11 months ago* [-]
My list of acceptable fonts; Helvetica (and related fonts like, Arial and Akzidenz-Grotesk), Futura (and related fonts like, Century Gothic) and OS defaults like Calibri and Lucida Grande. Also serifs can go fuck themselves.

Font snob.
qetuo18 1 point2 points3 points 11 months ago[-]
What is wrong with Comic Sans? Next to Ariel it is the easiest font to read.
otterplay 2 points3 points4 points 11 months ago* [-]
Yes... sans-serif fonts are much easier to read at smaller sizes. I don't understand this hatred for comic-sans. It's quite arrogant of folks to criticise something so vehemently without having any reason for doing it, except that they are having a joke with their friends.
I think it has to do with computer people having a disdain for people who are newbs. They want to be part of the in-club... and they get really upset if others treat them as if they are newbs. As someone else here said, it's a font which is used in preschool sometimes. And that means that particularly teenage males might not want to be associated with it.
idiotaddict 15 points16 points17 points 11 months ago[-]
I'd hate to be married to someone so controlling they need to tell me what fonts I can't use.

I'd hate to be married to someone with such a giant stick up their ass that they can't appreciate a simple harmless joke.
Please note that I posted this in /r/funny. Like most married couples, my wife and I joke with and hack on each other all the time. It's a sign of true love.

Judging by the number of upvotes yours and the previous two messages have gotten, this one should sit pretty at a single downvote and things ought to continue nicely downhill from here in a fairly linear fashion unless something goes awry.

Sometimes it's hard to tell. There are many people for which this would not be a joke. My initial reaction was the same as idiotaddict's. I guess it's all in the delivery? I hadn't noticed the subreddit either.

So true. My husband and I once had a fake fight in a restaurant - pretending to be really pissed, throwing one outrageous insult after another. We almost didn't get our bill until we started laughing hysterically. We don't take much seriously, and life is fun.
...and, I've hated Comic sans font for at least a decade. I'm going to have my hubby's tombstone chiseled with it - it will look like a cemetery version of Homer's webpage.

Meh, it's a good analogy. I'd hate to be married to someone who wasn't interested in my appearance. It's not like he said he'd divorce her if she didn't give up the font. Some day she'll convince him to give up his beloved bowling shirt and it'll all balance out.

agiaccone 1 point2 points3 points 11 months ago* [-]
Truth be told, most people don't care. As long as it's legible, and of a reasonable size, the vast majority of people don't care which type you use. Comic Sans is fine. So is Arial, and Courier and a thousand other fonts. What most people expect, is that there's a distinct set of upper and lower case characters and that they have the same baseline. Beyond that... 90% of your readers don't care.
Complaining about font choice, is just about the same as complaining about grammar choices. You care, 2% of your friends care... most people, not so much....
