Yet another site has to apologize for it's users getting infected by the 3rd party ads served on their site. This is why we use adblock and noscript.

Aerik [S] 2 points3 points 2 hours ago* [-]

Maybe you haven't been informed: most malware from the web comes in the form of an ad. pcworld.com reported an 80% share, but even if that's exaggerated, the trend is still very real.

Adblock Plus is actually quite capable of serving as a security extension. In fact, it has an anti-malware subscription on its subscription page. The author explains.

the author himself even chips in on some conversation about why 3rd party script is a security risk, and a perfect venue for adblock plus to serve as basic security.

here is a much older thread about using ABP as a security tool. It's actually extremely effective in Thunderbird, Mozilla's email client equivalent to firefox.

So, your thing about no reason to use adblock for security, is bogus, a claim founded on no evidence and in fact contrary to evidence.

As for being an unfair reason for using adblock: I believe this very submission proves you wrong. It's a damned good reason.

And need I remind you once again that it's the burden of the website to provide good ads for web surfer, not the burden of the web surfer to put themselves at risk and use up their own internet speed and bandwidth just to endure a shitty ad and support a site they have not made any contract to whatsoever.

As for the leeching bandwidth issue: it actually costs everybody more if they use flash ads. Flash ads are a fucking joke and are the biggest security risk of all. Any site that serves up that kind of bullshit deserves the bill. They're serving us risk with no benefit, as the use of flash ads dramatically slows and inhibits the user's experience, pollutes the user's cache, and quickly uses up the user's allotted internet usage if under a bandwidth cap.

Even if it comes in the form of a frame, the ad is ridiculously risky.

Reality 3, you 0. TKO

Hypotheses:

1) adblock and noscript are good security and convenience tools, and a reason many users who have both use them together is security.

** Any cursory look into noscript's forum and ABP's forum shows this to be true

2) You make claims about adblock's efficacy as a security tool that are not founded on evidence.

** You provide none.

3) Your claims about adblock's security efficacy is contrary to evience

** Look at my links!

4) you're a damned idiot

** You don't understand how bandwidth concerns work for users and providers, you spouted out your ass, and your idea of what is fair is inept.

UFOs have been sighted every night for weeks in Ohio. No one seems to know what it is; the first good footage was just released. Any astronomers on Reddit that can provide some insight?

Aerik -2 points-1 points 13 hours ago[-]

Yes, we do. It's VENUS. this shit happens every year. Geez. All you had to do was ask an astronomer.

Why do you think that astronomers don't see UFOs, despite their constant looking into the sky and refined technology to get good pictures of what's in the sky?

Because unlike idiots who only look up when somebody else yells fire, astronomers know what the fuck they're looking at.

Health package will cut the deficit by $130 billion

Aerik 1 point2 points 16 hours ago[-]

And we can cut it even more, much more, if we cut out the middlemen (insurance companies) who leech money out of healthcare by making a profit from it for no reason whatsoever than they can.

What we need is universal "socialized" healthcare. The money goes into giving people medicine and paying doctors/nurses a good wage for their insane hours and education, and nothing else.

Please, why is adding "oh, and this salesmen (insurance) gets a huge cut" justified?

I was bored in class one day and derived a formula for the area between three circles with different radii that are each tangent to the other two

Aerik 28 points29 points 1 day ago[-]

Actually it does have some usefulness. In electricity, we learn that the "skin effect" inside a wire pushes the current to the outer edges of a wire, leaving no conductivity at it's core.

Because of this, the amount of current a wire can carry is not just determined by it's makeup, but by it's cross-sectional area.

It would seem reasonable therefore that threaded wire, with it's many smaller wires instead of one big one, would have a greater total cross sectional area that is carrying current than not. However, this is not so.

The many small currents fail to effectively re-enforce each other through induction because of the air between the wires. That's where your formula would come in. You could investigate what sizes of threads in threaded wire best approximates the conductivity of a solid wire of the same total diameter (wire gauge).

That's a situation in which all radii are equal, though.

How much cookie dough will be left on the sheet? lol that's a silly one, but still, it's something the machines in the factory take into account.

Similar to the cookie dough: scrap metal. You're damned right that when mass producing cars, or more specifically something circular in this case like hub caps, cymbals for drum players, lids, a manufacturer wants to know exactly what combination of cutouts to use to get the most out of a sheet of material.

To derive from what you've done, how to figure out the leftover material from cutting any shape, now you're doing something extremely useful. I've been inside a GM plant, that is extremely important.

A soundproofed room of one’s own: 17 well-intended yet misguided feminist anthems

Aerik 0 points1 point 1 day ago[-]

1) Since when is anything pink does a feminist anthem? When's the last time you heard of Pink winning a feminist award or something? We can talk about elements of a song that are good, but to say it's a feminist anthem is just as "black and white" as the writer talks about.

2) O rly? Have you read feminists lately? We recognize that a disturbing amount of beatles music is about rape and domestic violence. Pro-rape and pro-violence, to be exact. But hey, he was called a revolutionary and it was in the 60's, therefore it's feminist, right? Barf.

3) "it’s basically a jingle for lady razors extended over three and a half minutes." -- that would be exactly why it's a non-feminist athem, not a feminist anthem that kinda went woopsy

4) never even heard of this one. From anybody. Ever.

5) Again, since when is christina aguilera a feminist icon? Just another britney spears, only she didn't have disney holding her back from the sex part when her career started.

6) You can't even remember that there, "sisters" meant specifically black women, could you? So no, it was not "50 years too late" to talk about [black] women being doctors and lawyers and all that kind of thing. Author is a moron.

7) Just once I'd like a "feminist anthem" to be from somebody who actually comes out and says they're a feminist and actually does feminist stuff in their daily lives, but no, we get these record-label-produced caricatures of pro-woman sentiments... Aretha franklin twice in a row?

8) another one I hadn't heard of

9) "In her quest to make “bitch” the “nigga” for post-Alanis pop-femmes," so what you really mean is, she was ripping off alanis morisette. what, are feminists too stupid to notice that? And we idolize her?

10) "In “Hats,” Amy Grant leans on hats as a tired metaphor for various aspects of a woman’s life." -- there's nothing tired about that metaphor. To this day, it is a common occurrence in many black-dominated churches for women to show off hats as a sign of cultural affluence. Authors: you're assholes, again.

11) Look, just say you don't get the fucking song instead of whining about how ambiguous you think it is. And since you don't get it, leave it out of this list.

12) Finally one that actually claims to be feminist. But then again, no feminist group endorses these teenage or pseudo-teenage morons. If anything the song is probably one of thousands of screeds accusing feminists of wanting to be men.

13) "James Brown has held many titles, like The Godfather Of Soul, the hardest-working man in show business, and Soul Brother Number One, but no one would ever put Trailblazing Feminist on his résumé." Yeah? THEN DON'T. It's not a feminist anthem if it came from an anti-feminist. fucking hell.

14) Fists in the air? Do people actually do that shit? Are you serious? wtf

15) I've actually posted an seen posts of feminists critiques of beyonce and her "single ladies" bullshit. Don't pretend it's a feminist anthem when it's been clearly rejected by actual feminists.

16) again, actual feminists gave the same critiques of the song. so how it became a "feminist anthem" is beyond me.

Also notice, at one point they authors criticize one singer for the "oh but dont' worry we're not lesbians" crap, then turns around and accosts a band for making it sound as if all feminists are lesbians. It seems to me that the ones most concerned about being perceived as lesbians, are the authors of this article.

OK but now make it glenn aka "frog" from Chrono Trigger, since that what it reminds me of.

A psychedelic plant from Africa has sparked an underground revolution in medicine: "ibogaine might cure addiction, sometimes with a single dose, and that sure is bad news for an industry built around a so-called “chronic” disease

Aerik -4 points-3 points 2 days ago[-]

And what industry would that be, that is build around addiction? Exactly how much money do you think is made off of addiction, considering that people with serious addictions end up losing jobs and insurance? Moron. This article is so biased it's not even funny.

You obviously didn't even bother to read the video.

Humans, gorillas, orangutans, lemurs, every primate you can think of.

We are all apes, we are all monkeys, we are all primates. It's all the same thing.

You can't remove a group from it's parent group and pretend it means something else.

Just watch the fucking video.

Saying we're not monkeys is saying we made the equivalent evolutionary move as going to los angeles by leaving california. Can't be done.
