That's the only way I can think to do it (row count + math). It is unfortunate mysql doesn't allow a sub-select within a delete statement on the same table. Edit: that's another way to do it. Hopefully someone else can come up with one query to do it all? It may also not be possible due to the limitations of mysql.

How about: delete from table order by id desc limit x; edit: sorry this is not exactly what you were looking for, but perhaps you can obtain a row count and subtract 5000 and x will be the remainder.
