Shrooms prove to be genuine medicine for cluster headache sufferers

The whole website sounds really sketchy. "Jerome Douglas, citizen journalist"? ...please. Medical use of mushrooms has been reported on in legitimate medical periodicals, so I don't see the need to post garbage from pseudo-news sites.

In fact, deaths have been linked to mushroom intoxication.

The word "intoxication" makes it sound like someone was killed by the toxicity of the substance, which is certainly false. More likely, they are (I hope) referring to people who have used it and did unsafe activities, like people have been doing with alcohol for thousands of years.

Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-AWSOME) today won adoption of an amendment to H.R. 2646, The Government Accountability Office (GAO) Improvement Act of 2009. The Kucinich amendment would grant the GAO the authority to audit the Federal Reserve’s response to the financial crisis.

I heard an anarchist once argue that third parties such as the Libertarian Party (USA) are counterproductive because they draw out what few small-government advocates there are in the mainstream parties, and transfer that talent to third parties that are incapable of overcoming the barriers third-party politicians face in overcoming what is effectively a two-party system in America.

Throughout U.S. history, third parties usually either die, or become one of the two parties (crowding the existing one out), and this usually happens in a fairly short period of time.

Thus, it seems more wise to have friends of small-government working within the mainstream parties (Paul-R, Kuchinich-D) rather than outside. Outsiders certainly play a vital role in educating the public and driving dialogue, but it's hard to change policy without insiders.

Ron Paul obstinately refuses to acknowledge that you have to actually use politics if you want to get things done.

Let me get this straight. The guy who's been elected to ten terms in office refuses to use politics to get things done? The libertarian who chooses to be part of a mainstream party (Republican) in order to work within the system instead of outside of it is refusing to play by the system's rules?

Pro-"Life" Leader unrepentant: "Tiller was 'a mass murderer and horrifically, he reaped what he sowed.'"

phenomenalgat -2 points-1 points 9 months ago[-]

Wow, way to be a sensationalist little shitball, n0t_5hure. It quotes the guy right in the article as saying that the shooting was wrong:

[Terry] says the gunman was wrong to kill Tiller, but that abortion opponents bear no responsibility for the action. Terry says Tiller was "a mass murderer and horrifically, he reaped what he sowed."

Saying that he "reaped what he sowed" is not a condoning of the shooting.

Redditors, how much do you earn per hour and what education do you have?

phenomenalgat 0 points1 point 10 months ago[-]

I've got a BA in economics.

Took a web developer job right after graduating two years ago.

Make $31k per year... if you count benefits, it's $43k.

So between $16 and $22 per hour.

WHAT? AP says Obama's cigarette tax hike represents a broken campaign promise because poor people smoke more and he said he wouldn't raise taxes on those making less than $200,000. Seriously?

I breathed in huge amounts of second hand smoke by just leaving my dorm because there was always a pack of 20 or so people right in front of the doors

Cue violin.

I heard a statistic recently that more people expect to become wealthy by winning the lottery or inheriting money than by saving and investing. I think the point is that wishful thinking has a tendency to supplant objectivity, and that the lines probably get more blurry the more desperate you are.

Obama, you ungrateful hypocrite, your online audience are the ones that raised half a billion dollars to put you in power

phenomenalgat 4 points5 points 11 months ago* [-]

So? Much contrary to the notion that voting third-party (or no party) is a "wasted vote", a real wasted vote is one for a candidate who is opposed to fundamental values you hold. Some even go so far as to say that if you disagree with all candidates (or the concept of the state/government itself), that you should refrain from voting, so as not to support the lesser of two evils, or to avoid lending legitimacy to the voting process.

You must have misunderstood what I was saying. I did not say that anyone who voted for Obama is a hypocrite, as you seem to assume.

I know that you and many other voters have many other issues you consider when evaluating a candidate. If drug legalization is not as important to you as these other issues are, and you voted for Obama because of his positions on those various issues, that's perfectly fine, and this is not hypocrisy in the least.

However, it seems there are a lot of people who thought that because Obama smoked weed in college and is not a Republican, that he must be a supporter of drug legalization. Undeterred by his firmly stated opinions opposing legalization, these people nevertheless voted for him expecting federal drug policy to do an about-face. It hasn't, and now these activists whine about how Obama cheated us and won't stand up for principles that he never claimed to have. This is hypocrisy -- to vote for a candidate who opposes your view, and complain when he does exactly what he said he would.

I encourage people to complain about this issue as loudly as possible -- I'm in that chorus too. But to say that Obama did a bait and switch is dishonest and ignorant. We got exactly what we voted for -- a president who has flatly and consistently stated that he does not support legalization of marijuana.

phenomenalgat 5 points6 points 11 months ago* [-]

For the last time: he stated his opposition to marijuana legalization in the campaign and has not wavered from that ignorant position. Anyone who values the right to smoke but voted for him anyway is the true hypocrite in this situation.

The way I see it, it's unfortunate that he does not support drug legalization, but it's downright upsetting that he can dismiss the issue with a condescending chuckle without even discussing the issues involved. In the campaign, he addressed the race and political issues surrounding Jeremiah Wright with tact and grace, but when it's time to talk about drug policy, he just says "Sounds like somebody's been smoking too many joints!" for laughs from the audience, then move on to another topic.
