Hey /r/Chicago - Feb 2 is election day - Get out and vote!

roddesu 0 points1 point 1 month ago[-]

I was the 5th to last person to vote in my precinct. Only 189 people voted...not many. Here are results: http://www.suntimes.com/news/elections/results/congress/index.html

This is more about saying fuck you to Fox than liking Obama

roddesu 1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]

Just did the poll...58% giving an A. They will mess with the results (removing all votes if the voter came from reddit.com) or not publish it.

Tenant/Rent Help!?!

I like the phrase "got into the sink..." <sigh> You sound like a 4 year old trying to explain how the scissors somehow "got into" their hair and lopped off a chunk. Stop using the passive verb "got" to try to escape the reality that you DID something.

You're over 18; be an adult, take responsibility for what you did...or head back to Digg; I'm sure they have a whole area devoted to how to get out of doing your homework. You made a simple mistake; it won't be the last. Is this how you're going to handle all of them?

You screwed over your neighbors as well. At minimum you should apologize to them for messing up their days. The maintenance guy was doing his job to try to prevent what you did from doing any more damage to your neighbors' apartments/belongings and the building. What a cop out to try to shift the blame to him. You sound like all the Republicans out there pointing fingers at Obama when their actions of the previous 8 years caused the problems he's trying to fix. Their screaming and hollering is simply a diversion.

Help! My condo association has said that they can enter my unit without my permission and turn on the central air heat. The unit is empty now waiting for a renter - is this legal at all?

roddesu 5 points6 points 3 months ago[-]

It is completely and totally up to the condo declarations and bylaws that you should have read before you bought it. It's a matter of contract law, nothing else. If you agreed to it by accepting the decs and bylaws, you agreed to it. You would have one hell of an uphill fight through many, many levels of courts to overturn it...and I'd bet you'd lose anyway.

Get your decs and bylaws out and read them. (They were the thick docs you got at closing...)

Where do i get the best (bacon) cheeseburger in town?

roddesu 0 points1 point 3 months ago[-]

Probably not the best...but I have become a fan of Five Guys. They seem to be popping up around the city.

Does anyone use stickies?

Never have, likely never will...been on Macs since Apple ][.

Another guy trying to figure out where to move.

Single family home is impossible at that price range except for the exceptions I outlined above. Even buying a townhouse is not possible. Finding garage parking is no big deal...a driveway...not going to happen unless you can buy a single family. However, but depending on where you live, renting garage parking will run you between $125 and $300/month. However, lots of condos in the south loop are giving it away for free if you'll rent or buy there.

Neighborhoods: follow the train lines and go out as far as you can stand to get as close to what you're looking for. The further out you go, the better shot you have at getting what you want. Otherwise...start looking at compromises and understand that you're moving to the city.

I love living in Lakeview—I live in Boys Town (East Lakeview) and love it even though I'm married with two kids. Lincoln Park is a bit too rich/snooty for my taste...much higher percentage of snobby people. Ravenswood is nice...lots of nice places. It depends on what you're into and what you want.

My final thought is...why would you live in a city on a huge lake and not live near the lake?

Sorry to say that you're preferences (single family, parking, etc.) are not in line with your budget in the city...unless you're willing to live in a drug/battle zone...and then no bank will lend you the money anyway because it's...well..a war zone.

Here's my recommendation...get on CraigsList and look at apartments. Even though it's a great time to buy if you have the money and credit score...I'd spend a year or two in the city and select the neighborhood you want to buy in. The neighborhoods are all so different that it is the single most important choice in your happiness in the city.

In any neighborhood you can find quiet. I live in one of the mostly densely populated parts of the city, near Wrigley...but on a side street. A block from my house there are parades, festivals, and HUGE night life...but I can hear crickets when I go to bed.

A year will also give you time to decide if you 1) want to stay in Chicago, 2) get adjusted to the cost of living here, 3) help you determine what part of the city you'd like to live in.

Good luck. I moved here to placate my wife...thought we'd be here for a year. I fell in love with the city and can't imagine leaving it now.

where is the best place in chicago to get a cup of coffee?

roddesu 1 point2 points 5 months ago[-]

I happened in to this store as well and really like the coffee. Illy is also served at a shop near my house, but it's somehow not as good?

My friend is leaving Chicago, and made an interesting analogy as to why....

roddesu 1 point2 points 1 year ago[-]

I grew up in Montana and South Dakota; I will always use that as my frame of reference. This means I will always love living in Chicago. Chicago winters are mild in comparison to MT & SD. -20 for two weeks with more than occasional dips to -40 is cold...Chicago's occasionally below 0 is not a big deal. And, I like winter. I like the idea of being inside and warm while outside it's nasty.

My favorite season? The next one.

He will live longer and you'll both be happier if you do get him fixed.

I would love to see some steel bars between me and Rove. Go get 'em! It's not like there shouldn't be a few dozen things he could get brought down for.

The teen walked into a Chicago police station yesterday and managed to get an assignment patrolling in a squad car for five hours before somebody figured out he's a kid.

roddesu 1 point2 points 1 year ago[-]

At 14 I was worrying about my zits...not how to fool cops into thinking I was a cop. This kid has got guts...or he's just stupid beyond belief. I can imagine a "Incredi-boy" scenario. "No, really kid...beat it. I work alone."

Japan - weird

If you had ever walked down the sidewalks of Shinjuku or Shibuya as I did for years and years, you would know exactly why this isn't weird.
